Clarifier

Clarifier

Clarifier is normally a circular tank fabricated from steel or RCC constructed which is built to remove suspended solids from a liquid to leave a clear overflow. Clarifier tank has sloped bottom surface with central cone to collect and dispose off the sludge. Feed solids in the water are settled in tank which are separated out continuously with the help of scrapping mechanism having scrapper blades. Scrapping Mechanism is driven by Central Drive unit.

Clarifiers are commonly used in all Water & Waste Water Treatment Plants, Chemical Plants, Power Plants, Sugar Industries, Food & Pharmaceutical, Effluent handling in various industries, etc. Based on different applications and size of the Clarifier, design of the Clarifier changes Mech-Chem Clarifier size may range anywhere from 4.0 Meters to 60.0 Meters in Diameter having water depth from 2.0 meters to 6.0 meters.

Clarifier feed can be from top of the tank through feed well or upward flow from central column through feed well of the tank. Clarifiers up to size 25.0 meter are normally, fed from top of the tank and above 25.0 meters can have feed from top as well as from the central column i.e. upward flow. Accordingly, Clarifier drives are also classified.

Clarifiers based on applications in different industries:

  • Clarifiers are commonly built in different materials of construction like Carbon Steel, SS304, SS316L, SS317L, SS904L, MS Rubber lined, Alloy steel, etc.
  • In some industries Clarifiers are built in multi compartments having common drive arrangement.
  • Clarifier drives can be provided with auto lifting arrangements with continuous torque monitoring device for safety of the equipment.
  • Few Clarifiers are built with skimming device to remove the scum, oil or foam on the top surface.

Types of Clarifier based on drive arrangements:

Bridge mounted Clarifiers (Type A): These are the most common type of clarifiers ranging from 4.0M dia. to 25.0M Dia. wherein Central Drives are mounted on bridge running radially across the diameter of the tank. Drives are connected with vertical shaft on which Rake Mechanism is suspended. Refer below sketch for Bridge Mounted Clarifiers.

Column mounted Clarifiers (Type S): Clarifiers above 25.0 M dia. are preferably column mounted type. Central Drive mechanism sit right on top of the column and there is turntable on which clarifier rake Mechanism is suspended. Bridge or walkway runs radially over the Drive mechanism. Refer below sketch for Column mounter Clarifiers
